A tooth, which is very decayed or damaged or loose because of gum disease, may have to be extracted. Children's teeth are sometimes taken out for 'orthodontic' reasons to help the new or remaining teeth grow regularly or without being over-crowded.

Extractions are also offered as a course of treatment Extractions are done mostly under local anaesthesia, and in majority of the cases are painless Although there are normally other ways a tooth can be saved. If a tooth is extracted, it creates a space that will need to be filled in with either a partial denture, a bridge or an implant. This is to prevent the teeth next to the gap from tipping and tilting into the space, which would cause crowding and an unsightly bite.

Having a tooth taken out can end pain and infection and can sometimes be the only way to keep your mouth healthy.
